Unitec-wide Professional Development Requirements – Parity Badges

Strategic Priority 1 in Manaakitia Te Rito, Unitec’s Renewal Strategy 2019-2022 says that we will:  Improve the success of all learners, achieving parity for Māori, Pacific and Under 25s, enhancing the success of International Learners and Disabled Learners, and serving the educational needs of Tāmaki Makaurau.

To help us achieve this, we have an annual requirement of all staff to undertake professional development in the form of at least one “parity badge” relating to supporting the achievement of parity for Māori, Pacific and Under 25 learners.

The requirement to undertake this professional development is embedded in the Achieve and Develop sections of our ADEPs as part of the Performance Partnering process.  We have a number of parity badges available that are specifically designed to build capability to support the achievement of parity for our Māori, Pacific and Under 25 learners.  The badges available to you will depend partly on your role (teaching or non-teaching) and any badges you may have already completed.

Parity badges for our teaching staff:

At least one of the two badges teaching staff are required to complete annually must be selected from the following list.  Note you will need to be logged into Moodle to access the links – if you haven’t used Moodle before, check out this Quick Start Guide.

If you haven’t yet completed any levels of the Living Te Noho Kotahitanga badge, this should be your first parity badge priority.

Parity badges for our non-teaching staff:

All non-teaching staff are required annually to complete at least one of the following parity badges available for non-teaching staff:

Note that your ‘next level of progression’ will depend on what level you have already achieved:

Online Modules for all staff:

“Know the Code” Online Student Code of Practice Module

This module has been created as an opportunity to revisit our pastoral care obligations and remind ourselves of all the support we have in place to manaaki the success of our students.  It is intended to give all staff a baseline knowledge of the Code of Practice, what it requires of us and how this connects to our kaupapa.

The module should take approximately 45 – 60 minutes to complete and is a requirement for all staff.  On completing the module, you will be asked to indicate you have understood the content covered and the role we all have in ensuring a learner-centred environment. Completion of this module will be captured on your employee learner record.

Disability Confidence 101 Module

This Disability Confidence eLearning training resource seeks to challenge ingrained cultural and attitudinal barriers that perpetuate disability discrimination and provides participants with a general overview of the legislative framework which supports the inclusion of disabled people in New Zealand.

The training consists of four modules which must be completed in successive order. Each module ends with a short quiz to allow participants to demonstrate their understanding. You can complete the disability confidence eLearning training at your own pace.

The module should take approximately 45- 60 minutes to complete and is a requirement for all staff. You do not need to finish the training in one sitting. Please submit your Certificate in Moodle on completion for recording purposes.

Cyber Aware online module

This module has been designed to provide a good understanding of the cyber risks we face, both in our professional and in our personal lives, and offer clear actionable steps and advice we can each take to mitigate these.

The module should take approximately 45 – 60 minutes to complete and is a requirement for all staff. Completion of this module will be captured on your employee learner record.

Other things you can do to develop this capability

In addition to the required completion of badges, there are lots of other things you can do to build your capability to support the achievement of parity for our Māori, Pacific and Under 25 learners:
