My utmost gratitude to God the Almighty that Unitec Eid Celebration went wonderfully well. The event was well attended by both ākonga and kaimahi enjoying activities that included henna painting, Islamic art and calligraphy, trying on hijab and traditional costumes.
The performance of ‘Window of Palestine’ by Dr Sameh Shamout, a lecturer from the School of Architecture was received very well.
Everyone also enjoyed a variety of traditional Eid dishes from many parts of the world, which are mostly homecooked meals and deserts. A big thank you to the Unitec whānau who prepared and represented their cultural cuisines at our event. This time, more ākonga turned up to volunteer as compared to the previous Eid. This is indeed a great collaboration.
Eid celebration marks the end of Ramadan, the fasting month for Muslims. At Unitec, Eid celebration is becoming an annual event, a tradition which we wish to continue. Eid celebration is a great opportunity for our whānau to learn and share diverse cultures and perspectives.
Our special thanks to the organising committee members: Mun Naqvi, Asma Munir, Shazneen Saeed, Asif Fakhruddin, Tasneem Rajkotwala, Mohammad Sarker, Dr Muhammad Sajjad Haider Naqvi, Raina Taite, Romy Sunny, Dr Yusef Patel, Lubna Khan, our guest performer Dr Sameh Shamout, and our great supporter Annette Pitovao.
