Unitec Osteo clinic – here for the whole community

A message from our Osteopathy staff and students….

Kia ora!

The Osteo building, B61, marked with the highlighted circle

We’re the staff and students of the Osteopathy department, and we’re writing to you from our on-campus clinic – Unitec Osteopaths. We’re located in Building 61, only a short walk from Te Puna.

We’ve been at Unitec’s Mt Albert Campus for over 20 years now – Some of you may even remember back to when we were called Clinic 41, on the corner of Gate 3.

The clinic is an integral part of the learning experience for ākonga in the Master of Osteopathy – It’s where they do their work-based learning over two years, learning how to manage clinical encounters under the tutoring of registered, qualified osteopaths. Between them, our tutors have over 190 years’ experience!

A great service for the whole community – book now!

The clinic is of course open to all of the Unitec whānau, ākonga and kaimahi alike, but also to the public, and we’re delighted to have been helping our greater Owairaka community, and Tāmaki Makaurau, to have better health all this time.

A positive review for the Osteo service…

We asked someone who has benefitted from our service what they thought:

How long have you been using the clinic?

I used it for the first time in 2018 for a back-related issue. After experiencing amazing results holistically, I also brought in my two children to be treated, one for dance-related hip issues, and the other for stress induced tummy pain. These were the starting points – the students then went deeper to identify the causes – not only physical but mental as well. We used the service regularly for almost a year, and I then started to use it again early this year.

What made you want to give the clinic a try?

One of my colleagues at Unitec said that she was receiving treatment for a shoulder issue and she was very happy with the results, and the flexibility of booking the appointment to suit her family commitments and working hours. I thought it would be a good idea to give it a go for myself – I found the service very flexible and also affordable.

What is the stand-out experience for you?

The students and their professional relationship with their teachers/supervisors. The learning process for them and, also for myself. I found myself learning more about my body and discovering how it responds to stress and injuries. I also liked that the teachers attend parts of the visit and supervise to make sure that the treatment is going well, the students are learning and are professional. The ongoing communication and questions. Another thing that I found really good was the flexibility and options to choose different practitioners/students based on what worked for me and my family.

What would you say to someone considering booking an appointment?

I always recommend to my colleagues at Unitec and to my friends outside Unitec to use this amazing affordable service. I would tell them that it is an amazing opportunity for our students to learn and, also to be part of their learning journey.
