Unitec joins forces with industry leaders to host virtual ‘cyber chat’

Dila Beisembayeva, Academic Programme Manager in our School of Computing, Electrical and Applied Technology

Our School of Computing, Electrical and Applied Technology recently partnered with industry leaders to host a webinar on starting a career in cybersecurity, with the disruption of COVID-19 forcing many people to re-think their career pathways and employment opportunities.

Dila Beisembayeva, Academic Programme Manager in our School of Computing, Electrical and Applied Technology, hosted the ‘cyber chat’ which featured a panel discussion with representatives from Datacom, Spark and CCL, as well as Conan Bradley, a Detective Sergeant with the New Zealand Police who also lectures in cybercrime and cybersecurity at Unitec.

The one-hour webinar, held on Tuesday 2 June, also offered an introduction to our Cybersecurity programme, and provided an opportunity for participants to ask questions of the panellists. The turnout was impressive, with 180 people attending.

One participant said it was invaluable to ‘meet’ and connect with the people behind the Cybersecurity Diploma:

“It was great to meet you at the webinar about Unitec Cyber Security Diploma course. I’m writing to say thank you for hosting it. I so appreciated you sticking to the time, being in control and making it run seamlessly. I haven’t heard of Unitec before and the webinar invite sent me down a rabbit hole of google searches. This opportunity to ‘meet’ and connect real people behind the course is invaluable. I am considering degree in IT and now look into Cybersecurity program, thanks to the webinar! Of course with the lockdown, getting to NZ is going to be an interesting quest to solve for an international student. I wanted to ask you how the three companies were chosen for internships. These are all great and I was curious what makes them perfect for internships in particular. Again, thank you for this wonderful opportunity to connect.”
