Unified Masters of Applied Science Launches Semester 2

Te Pūkenga is set to launch a new Master of Applied Science, specialising in Biodiversity Management.

The industry-focused and highly practical postgraduate programme is the latest jewel in a comprehensive range of programmes offered by Te Pūkenga. These include conservation, ecological restoration, biosecurity, pest management, and associated social science areas.

A unique feature of the Master’s programme is the inclusion of Mātauranga Māori content, developed in consultation with local iwi, to provide cultural competency training and further enrich graduates’ skillsets.

“This exciting Master’s programme demonstrates our commitment to providing innovative, industry-focused qualifications that will empower graduates to take up more senior, specialist and consultancy roles within the biodiversity management field,” says Megan Gibbons, Pourangi Mātauranga me ngā Pūnaha Ako | DCE Academic Centre and Learning Systems.

“This aligns with the sector’s commitment to meaningful engagement with industry, mana whenua and communities.

“Graduates will be equipped with an advanced body of knowledge, enabling them to confidently engage in original research in an applied science context.”

The Master of Applied Science in Biodiversity Management has been developed in response to wide feedback advocating for a biodiversity programme to facilitate career progression, while accommodating ākonga who wish to remain in work while they study.

Significantly, the programme offers mixed modes of delivery. Theory will be delivered largely online, with each course being taught by kaimahi from around the country. The majority of courses will feature practical block courses, potentially in different regions.

The programme is the result of strong collaboration within Te Pūkenga network: initiated by kaimahi from Northtec, Unitec and Toi Ohomai, nine business divisions worked together to co-develop the programme.

“This approach is indicative of the sector’s dedication to meeting industry needs and enhancing learner outcomes,” Dr Gibbons says.

The 180-credit Master’s programme includes a 60-credit Postgraduate Certificate and a 120-credit Postgraduate Diploma. A suite of 15-credit courses, available to all three programmes, is designed with a high degree of flexibility, with ākonga able to transition from the Postgraduate Certificate to either of the other two programmes. Those enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma can apply to progress to the Master’s if they meet the criteria.

The Dissertation and Thesis projects will have an industry or community focus, ranging from project topics coming from industry through to work-based initiatives.

Sounds very interesting, especially the måtauranga component. Where can we find information about the suite of post-grad cert courses offered?
