Planting of 150 trees is underway at Mt Albert campus

Our Facilities Management team are underway with the ordering and planting of 150 trees around our Mt Albert campus. This is a succession planting programme that focuses on larger specimen and native trees.

The planting is being done to replace trees that have been removed due to disease, damage or are in unsuitable locations.

As outlined by Nick Hanvey, Infrastructure Operations Manager, it’s important that we maintain our beautiful whenua and the ‘green belt’ that surrounds our campus, so ensuring we have a carefully planned and ongoing succession planting programme is essential mahi.

Having a strong urban ngahere (forest) has multiple benefits. These include health and wellbeing, reduction of the ‘heat island’ impact, shade, ‘beautification’, along with environmental, economic and also cultural benefits.

Nick said “Our urban ngahere is something I’m incredibly passionate about, with over 30% of Auckland’s tree canopy being removed in the last 10 years, we all have a role to play in ensuring that there are trees of varying height classes across the city. 100 5 metre tall trees cannot provide the benefits of one ancient tree, so we must be constantly working on replacing removals, adding stronger or more disease resistant varieties, as well as ensuring that populations of birds, bats and other flora and fauna have homes across the city. We have focused this year on expanding, improving and replacing our rakau so that we are contributing to the size and diversity of our own ngahere, as well as that of the wider community”.

If you do notice that any of the new plantings look like they need some extra care (i.e. water or replacement of stakes), drop a message to FM Help.
