Thanking our Crew who keep Unitec Shining

Our hard working cleaning professionals were acknowledged for their mahi and service to Unitec at a special morning tea held in the Events Kitchen in Te Puna on Wednesday.

The occasion coincided with Thank Your Cleaner Day which is celebrated annually on 15 October.

While the day is celebrated worldwide, it originated in New Zealand to shine a spotlight on the importance of this role for all organisations. It’s an opportunity for institutions and employers to show gratitude for a job well done.

Kaimahi from our Facilities Management and Support Services teams attended the event.

Graeme Clarke, CEO of City Cleaning Services, the company contracted to provide cleaning services to Unitec was also present, personally thanking each member of the cleaning team before giving them gifts from the company.

“I have been in the Industry for over 15 years and I come from a cleaning background myself so I appreciate what you all do,” Mr Clarke says.

City Cleaning Services has more than 700 employees across the country with around twenty working at Unitec.

“It’s a special day because I love working here,” says Segia Mamea, who has been with us for 15 years.

“The people here make working enjoyable.”

Shar Lewin, Customer and Contracts Lead says it was a privilege to celebrate our cleaners, not only to express our Te Noho Kotahitanga values and the importance of whānaungatanga, but also in recognition that every role is valued and every person matters.

“Some of our cleaners have been with us for over 20 years which is a true testament to their dedication, resilience, and deep connection to our Unitec community,” Shar says

“Their mahi is not only essential, it embodies their spirit of service and commitment.”

“Kore te hoe, kore te tatā (Without the paddle, the waka can’t sail).”
