Repeating a Course

Rules for repeating courses

Individual Programme Regulations contain specific approved details of provisions for re-enrolment. Programme Regulations over-ride general policy, procedure or rules.

Repeating a course that has been failed

Some courses are specifically excluded from each of the following provisions, please see specific Programme Regulations for details.

Enrolling in a course for a second time

The following general rules apply:

Programmes
levels 1 – 7
Students who fail a course once may apply to re-enrol in that course for a second time through the standard enrolment process.
Programmes
levels 8 – 9
Students enrolled in a level 8 course that comprises part of a postgraduate programme do not have an automatic right to re-enrol. Students must apply for permission to re-enrol to the relevant Academic Authority.

Master’s research thesis, dissertation, or research project at Level 9 may not be repeated. Conditions related to these level 9 courses are noted in Programme Regulations.

Enrolling in a course for a third time

Students may not enrol in a course for a third time without first gaining permission to do so.

Programmes
levels 1 – 7
Students who wish to enrol into a course that they have previously failed twice, must gain approval from the Relevant Academic Authority. The Student must request approval by completing and submitting an ‘Application for Third Time Enrolment Form.’ Each application is assessed and approved by the relevant Academic Authority.
Programmes
levels 8 – 9
There is no provision for third time enrolment for a course that comprises part of a Postgraduate Programme.

Enrolling in a course for a fourth time

There are no provisions for enrolment in a Course more than three times.

Other provisions

A student may apply for permission to enrol in a previously failed course under a Certificate of Proficiency with the approval of the relevant Academic Authority.

Once completed the student may make a formal written request to the Programme Academic Quality Committee (PAQC) that they consider the new grade achieved be transferred to their previously failed course grade. Approval for such an action is at the complete discretion of the PAQC.

Repeating a course that has not been failed

Under some circumstances a student may repeat a course to improve their grades for the purpose of achieving a higher Grade Point Average (GPA). Grade-point averages are used for validating eligibility for a number of awards of excellence such as Honours and Senior Scholar, as well as for entry criteria into higher level study.

A student may only do this once. Students who wish to repeat a course to increase their grade must notify the relevant Academic Authority.

In some circumstances a student may be required to enrol in the previously passed course under a Certificate of Proficiency. Once completed the student may request that the new grade achieved be transferred to their previous course.

Carrying over course grades

Students who are repeating a Level 1 – 8 course would normally be required to submit all assessment items. In some cases, with the prior approval of the relevant Academic Authority, students may not be required to repeat an equivalent assessment item that they had previously passed. This must be negotiated within the first two weeks of the commencement of the course with any course grade that will be carried over being specified and communicated with Academic Quality Administration.

Some courses are specifically excluded from the above provision. These exclusions will be noted in Programme Regulations.

There are no provisions for carrying over a course assessment grade when repeating a Level 9 Course.
