Performing and Screen Arts Project

PASA Project Update

This page will provide a centralised portal for staff to access regular updates on movement involving PASA (Performing and Screen Arts) and DCA (Design and Contemporary Arts) and the School of Creative Industries.

As you are aware from 2022 we will no longer have the suitable facilities at our Mt Albert campus to deliver the practical teaching of the Dance and Acting programmes.  Work is well underway investigating alternative delivery options and finding the best solution for our learners.

Updates on progress in the various workstreams will be centralised here in an effort to provide clarity on progress across a number of challenges we currently face.

9 September 2021 – Changes to the Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts.

We have made the difficult decision to pause all Level 5 (Year 1) enrolments for the 2022 intake of Dance in the Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts programme at Unitec. Although we are disappointed that we won’t have a new cohort of dancers joining us in 2022, the pause allows time for the redevelopment of the Unitec dance offering so that we continue to be a vibrant, world-class dance programme that incorporates Mātauranga Māori and Pacific knowledge and values.

The pause is necessary as the Dance discipline requires specialised technical spaces that will no longer be available on campus following the sale of Unitec land and buildings in 2018 to the Ministry of Housing & Urban Development (MHUD). These are mainly at the north end of the campus where the performing and screen arts disciplines are concentrated, and must be vacated by the end of this year.

New intakes for Acting and Screen Arts are not affected, and the Level 6 and 7 (Years 2 and 3) Dance cohorts will continue with a combination of on-campus and off-site delivery in 2022. Unitec is in the process of securing a suitable community-based dance studio for this purpose.

Once completed, the School will have its own purpose-built facilities in Building 108 at the southern end of the campus. Building 108 represents a significant investment for Unitec and will have capacity to house a large proportion of the School’s programmes.

If you have any queries at all about the changes to the Dance programme, please contact PASA Academic Programme Manager Michael Miller mmiller@unitec.ac.nz

PASA Delivery model options:

Our PASA Project Steering group and Discipline Leaders have explored and analysed potential options for the continued delivery of the Acting and Dance Pathways from 2022. As a result of the analysis work, potential delivery models have been narrowed down and further investigation into the viability of these options is underway.

Offsite delivery locations:

Scoping of potential spaces and locations for offsite delivery of Dance and Acting is complete. Initial financial costings have been submitted to the steering group.

Stakeholder Engagement:

Engagement is underway with internal and external stakeholders including our Industry Workforce Development Team. The expertise of our stakeholders will be invaluable in the continued exploration of further delivery options.

Next Steps:

These options have been presented to the steering group and a time will be co-ordinated to discuss and seek feedback on the options in an open forum with the PASA Programme team.

Business Plan Submission:

The steering group is preparing to submit a business case to our Executive Leadership Team outlining options for consideration regarding our PASA programme. While options will be presented to ELT as the final decision with sit with the leadership team in the coming weeks. A high-level plan and timeline of events can be located here.

Our move to Building 108

Building progress:

Our Board, Te Pūkenga and the Ministry of Education have approved funding of approximately $24 million to complete Building 108 which will include a modern open-plan space for our School staff and learners. Work on the build site is progressing well and our project timelines and milestones are on track for delivery from Semester 1, 2022.

Final design consultation of B108:

We are nearing the final stages of the detailed design sessions for both the DCA and Screen requirements. A lot of work has been put into this design by our team to ensure the requirements reflect the delivery of programmes, for staff, and the needs of our learners.

New ‘Ways of Working’:

Over the coming months our project team will send information around new ways of working. We realise moving into the modern, open-plan spaces in B108 will be a change for many staff so please take time to visit other Schools that now work in similar spaces such as Trades and Services and Computing, Electrical and Applied Technology, and consider how the new space will work for you. Please discuss with your APM about arranging visits to other teams and spaces.

School equipment and assets:

Our project lead is working with Team Leads and the Finance team to understand PASA’s list of formal assets and the processes around non-listed assets. We know that we will have props, costumes, and technical equipment to be retired and sold or discarded and this needs to be completed through a managed process. Please touch base with you Discipline Lead or Line Manager in the meantime if you have any questions.

Clearing out your personal spaces:

Please start considering what isn’t required for our move to B108. We simply do not have the space to take everything acquired over many years of delivery. Over the next few weeks, the Infrastructure team will organise large bins for staff to start discarding resources not required for the move. Thank you all in advance as we prepare for the move later in the year.
