Te Whatu Kairangi Award recipients honoured at Parliament

Dr Joseph Aziz and Jone Tawaketini were presented with Te Whatu Kairangi Awards at a ceremony at Parliament this week, hosted by Hon Penny Simmonds, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills.

Dr Aziz received Te Whatu Kairangi Award for his demonstration of an outstanding commitment to teaching that makes a difference for the delivery of anatomy and physiology, radiology, and clinical anatomy programmes at Unitec. His citation read,

“As a colleague, he is fully supportive of the team, working closely to ensure their success.”

Jone Tawaketini received Te Whatu Kairangi Award | Le Moana Mua in recognition of being a phenomenal educator who champions the Pacific voice and continues to grow staff capability and capacity to empower and support Pacific learners.

One of his students commented,

“Jone’s unwavering support and dedication helped me navigate difficult times and complete my degree.”

Te Whatu Kairangi Awards celebrate outstanding tertiary educators who are making a difference to learners, their whānau and communities. The have grown to be the most well-recognised and respected tertiary education awards in New Zealand.
