Sue Emerson appointed as APM – Team Leader

Congratulations to Sue Emerson, who has recently taken up a new role as Academic Programme Manager –  Team Leader.

Sue will provide support and people leadership for the APMs across the Institute, working in partnership with Trude Cameron, Operations Manager – Schools. While Trude focuses on process, planning and operational support for APMs to ensure academic quality, Sue will assist our academic managers in the people related areas of the role such as professional development, connecting to and working with Programme Coordinators, workflows and leading staff teams.

This work will connect with the work the Heads of School are doing. There will be a close link with Nick Sheppard, Executive Director – Schools and Performance on academic alignment, people and academic structure and coordination.

Sue loves the idea that she can combine her current APM Community Studies Role with supporting the team of Academic Programme Managers.

“This new role provides the opportunity to speak to the very heart of our place, manaaki for each other, looking after our rangatira.”

Sue believes that continuing to lead as an APM in the School of Community Studies in 2020 will allow her to continue to experience the coalface of educational leadership from the daily successes to the daily challenges.

“It’s a privilege to be able to contribute by leading across the institution with the other APMs. I hope to contribute in different spaces at Unitec through working alongside the APMs around people, individual and collective capability, workflow, connections with service centres, problem solving and collective success,” said Sue.

A bit more about Sue…

Sue has a Masters of Philosophy (First Class Honours) and has been an educator for over three decades, firstly as a secondary school physical education teacher and over the past 27 years in tertiary education. She has held the Head of Department of Sport position at both Unitec and MIT.

Her core areas of interest are leadership development, including sport leadership, youth leadership, and creating environments that provide opportunities for personal development. And of course playground escapades with her three grandies!

Sue has written four youth leadership programmes for Sport NZ and Netball NZ which are delivered in schools, clubs and national sport organisations throughout Aotearoa. She is the Chair of the NZ Olympic Education Commission, a founding and current member of Women in Sport Aotearoa, a key facilitator for the NZ Olympic Women’s Leadership Academy and is regularly an invited guest speaker and workshop facilitator. Most importantly, Sue loves to walk alongside others toward collective success.

The only thing I dislike about this announcement is it probably means Sue will be spending a bit less time in Sport…. love your leadership Sue. Glad more people will get to experience working with you!
