Student-led Landscape Architecture journal – ‘XSection 2019’

Daniel Irving – Lecturer and Academic Leader, School of Architecture

Last month our Landscape Architecture students launched the latest edition of XSection, an annual publication and industry engagement project, which profiles individuals and practices across many environmental design disciplines. XSection captures the journey of landscape architecture year on year, is a resource for students, professionals and the public, and is an important collaborative project for our Bachelor of Landscape Architecture students.

Lecturer and Academic Leader Daniel Irving supports and co-ordinates the students through the project, a credit-bearing elective, and provides guidance, facilitation of input from industry and experts, fundraising (co-funding comes from practices LandLAB, Boffa Miskell, Jasmax and Isthmus, and the School of Architecture), and is also the Editor of the journal. The students are responsible for the complete production from the call for submissions, engaging with industry, choosing the annual theme, designing the layout, interviewing submitters and more.

This three students who led the project, Nicholas Fortier (3rd year BLA), Mathilde Doesburg (2nd year BLA), and Jayden Robinson (2nd Year BLA), selected the 2019 journal theme Redefinition, which asked the submitters of articles and projects to reflect how environmental practice is currently being defined, capturing the changing landscape of technology, ecology and environment. You can learn more about the 2019 edition and earlier publications on the XSection site.

XSection 2019 – Redefinition was launched in November at a formal industry event sponsored by architecture practice Jasmax, a valued Unitec partnership.

Our School of Architecture is looking forward to launching their 2020 XSection journal from their new home in building 048, and welcoming all staff to be part of this special event.
