Student Course Surveys now open

Semester 2 student course surveys are now open for three weeks from Monday 14 October to Sunday 3 November.

Please note: These are different surveys to the Student NPS survey that students are also asked to complete.

Students can access their course surveys using this link: www.unitec.ac.nz/ratemycourse

This link can be used by all students and will take them to the RateMyCourse portal where the student can enter their student ID. The list of courses allocated to them will be shown for them to complete.

Please send this link to your students and encourage them to participate – we are relying heavily on staff to drive student engagement with this process. We recommend that you allocate 15 minutes of class time for your students to complete the survey.

We reached out to a couple of staff who have achieved excellent response rates in the past to see what they were doing to achieve these results, and why they thought student feedback was important.

Liz Rainsbury, APM in Applied Business noted that:

“As an Academic Programme Manager, I believe it’s important to evaluate student feedback to continuously improve our courses and programmes. It’s also about supporting staff to enhance their teaching. High response rates are important to ensure the reliability of the feedback we receive.

“I actively encourage the team to achieve good response rates by providing interim ratings. We are also supported by Howard, our TPA rep who reminds our staff of the importance of this process.

“Overall, I think our team of lecturers are highly committed to the success of their students and their professional careers as accounting academics.

“They understand these surveys are integral to our collective goal of continuous improvement.”

Arfian Zudana, an Accountancy Lecturer in Applied Business, added that high response rates from ākonga have helped improve his course delivery:

“Getting students’ feedback is essential to me. Aligning with the Kaitiakitanga value, where I see myself as a guardian of knowledge, high response rates from ākonga help me improve my course delivery and myself as an academic.

“At our school, we gather mid-semester feedback, allowing students to share their thoughts on the first half of the learning process. Every semester, I summarise this feedback, discuss it with the class, and share my plans to accommodate relevant feedback.

“This process demonstrates that their input is genuinely considered and respected, aligning with Unitec’s Ngākau Māhaki value. Many students have expressed that this discussion makes them feel heard and valued. This process is one of my ways to achieve high response rates for my course survey.

“I also embrace the value of Mahi Kotahitanga, where I tell ākonga to help me improve my course delivery and myself by giving honest feedback. This collaboration is vital for creating a dynamic and responsive learning environment.”
