Unitec vs University of Auckland – our first leap into Futsal

Unitec hosted the University of Auckland at the end of May for their first-ever friendly game of futsal, a form of indoor soccer.

The event was put together with the help of Marvin Eakins, the Futsal Development Officer of AFF/NFF (Auckland Football Federation/Northern Region Football Federation), Declan Peach – Futsal coach at UoA, and Daniel Achonwa – International Relationship Coordinator at Unitec.

The students from both tertiary institutes have been looking forward to this opportunity for some time so Daniel took the initiative to set the match up.

“It was great playing against UoA in a friendly futsal match, one of many to come I’m sure. We see this as the start of a sporting relationship between Unitec and UoA, as well as the start of a sporting culture that transcends futsal. This was the first actual futsal match for our Unitec team; we’ve got the talent and we’ve got the love for the game, now our mindset and motivation, alongside teamwork and hard work will make all the difference in our future games,” Daniel said.

Although University of Auckland won the match, Unitec is looking forward to a rematch and possibly joining a futsal league that UoA are organising.

Unitec is also starting it’s own fustal league for students and staff. If you are interested in joining, email Daniel Achonwa
