Stay Smart Online This Black Friday & Cyber Monday

The biggest online shopping days of the year are just around the corner.

While the deals can be great, so can the scams! Cyber criminals love this time of year, using fake offers, phishing emails, and dodgy websites to trick people into sharing personal or financial information.

Before you jump on that “too good to be true” deal, take a moment to think twice especially if you’re shopping or checking personal emails on your MIT or Unitec device or network.

A few quick tips to keep you safe:

  • 🚫 Don’t click on links in emails or texts you weren’t expecting — go straight to the retailer’s official website instead.
  • 🔐 Use strong, unique passwords and switch on multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever you can.
  • 👀 Double-check the sender’s email address — scammers often use names that look almost right but aren’t.
  • 💳 Be cautious with payment details — only shop on secure sites (look for “https://” and the padlock icon).
  • 🧠 Trust your instincts — if something feels off, it probably is.

If you spot a suspicious email or message, don’t open it or click anything  just report it to the IT Service Desk so we can take a look.

Let’s all stay a step ahead of the scammers and keep this shopping season safe, smart, and scam-free.

A reminder that using your work credentials for personal activity is prohibited.
