ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras) and Visitors/Contractors/Pick Up-Drop Off

We soft launched the mention of these cameras a few weeks ago and we have had a lot of feedback from you all asking what is this new ANPR technology?

ANPR cameras have been installed around campus. They will capture all vehicles entering and exiting campus. If any vehicle leaves campus without paying for the parking session OR being on the list of permitted vehicles (visitors or contractors – see below), the registered owner of the vehicle will receive an infringement notice for non-compliance. Ways to avoid this? For frequent users, it is still best practise to pay on arrival, using the usual payment options you have used in the past. The notable flexibility with the cameras is that if you do forget and remember a few hours later, as long as you have paid before exiting, you’ll be compliant.

  • How will it know not to charge visitors or contractors?
Using the “request visitor parking” information (see below for instructions), you can book a visitor park as usual, with one additional step, you’ll need to have the applicable license plate included in your request. This information will be sent on to Stellar to exclude that vehicle for the specified carparking appointment time. For contractors – if you have regular contractors coming to campus please contact carparking@unitec.ac.nz and we’ll arrange for them to be added to the exclusion list.

  • What about vehicles coming in to drop someone off, or pick someone up?
There is a grace period of 20 minutes as long as the vehicle has entered and left within a continue 20 minute period, they will not need to pay.

Request Visitor Parking

To request a visitor parking, please see attached instructions to book using Outlook calendar. Please note: due to number plate recognition cameras, you MUST provide the applicable license plate in your appointment request. Please be aware, this is the only visitor parking, and it is in high demand, if there is nothing available for the desired timeslot, the next option is general paid parking (paid parking fees apply). We will be tweaking this system to make it a more user-friendly experience, but we’ll be in touch when that time comes.

If you have a situation that isn’t covered above, get in touch with us at carparking@unitec.ac.nz we’ll have a kōrero and see if we can find a solution.

Coming Soon – VPermits

To enhance the user experience, VPermits are coming to Unitec very shortly. This will allow for more flexibility on paying for sessions in advance and is being used with success at MIT, Mercy Ascot Hospital, AUT Millenium and many large universities across the ditch in Australia. You can find more information at this link https://www.stellar.org.nz/virtual-parking-permits. A tailored approach is almost ready to launch at Unitec so watch this space for more information.

Problems? Questions we haven’t covered?

We know sometimes things don’t always go to plan. If you find yourself, or know of someone else, in a situation that requires closer attention, please get in touch. This includes visitors who may have gotten caught out by staying a minute or two longer (being aware the time they entered will also be captured).

In the first instance, you can contact Stellar directly, further details can be found here https://www.stellar.org.nz/contact-us. However, Unitec has a dedicated email account for carparking queries and this is monitored closely so please get in touch if you are experiencing persistent issues at carparking@unitec.ac.nz.

Finally, if, after looking at all the information above, you still have a question – send us an email at carparking@unitec.ac.nz and we’ll come back to you as soon as we can.
