Ngā Kaitiaki Taiao Wānanga – Open Invitation to All Kaimahi

Tēnā koutou e te whānau o Ngā Kaitiaki, Ngā mihi o te wā nei ki a koutou.

Ngā Kaitiaki Taiao Wānanga

This is an open invitation to all who wish to attend the upcoming Ngā Kaitiaki Taiao Wānanga, held on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th February 2026.

This event will be included as part of Unitec’s 50-year celebrations.

As Unitec marks 50 years, it is important to pause and acknowledge the whenua of Te Noho Kotahitanga marae, and Unitec’s Wairaka campus, which has remained constant through many institutional changes. In particular, the life-giving waters of the puna Te Waiunuroa o Wairaka, and all her biodiversity, including Rangimārie pā harakeke. These taonga whenua continue to sustain this place, and all those who learn, work, and live here, as well as wider whānau, and community.

Thursday 12 February 2026

12.00 pm: Whakatau at Ngākau Māhaki whare nui

12.10 – 2.00 pm: Ngā Kaitiaki Taiao Hui

This session will be facilitated by whaea Kimi Penetito and provide space to wānanga the following:

  • who we are as a Ngā Kaitiaki Taiao collective
    • the whakapapa of Ngā Kaitiaki
    • participation in breakout groups focused on current projects and activities Ngā Kaitiaki are involved with
    • contributions to our Kaitiakitanga Strategy

We will include a break for afternoon tea which will be provided.

 

5.30pm: Early evening session
Te Ara o Wairaka hīkoi: Kōrero on Ngākau Māhaki wharenui | history and whakapapa of Te Waiunuroa o Wairaka | hīkoi.

Supper provided.

 

Friday 13 February 2026 – Ōtane

Manaaki Whenua Working Bee – Purpose: To protect and care for the mauri of Te Waiunuroa o Wairaka and all her biodiversity, including Rangimārie pā harakeke.

9.00 am: Karakia (meet outside Pūkenga by Rangimārie pā harakeke).

12.00 pm: wā kai
