With great sadness, the School of Trades and Services family announced the passing of our beloved colleague Darrell Edwards. After a short illness, Darrell passed away Sunday evening surrounded by his family.
Over 15 years of service with Unitec, Darrell was a gentle soul who never wished malice upon anybody. His love of teaching was inspiring, as was his passion for motorcycles and racing. He had an infectious personality and humour where you were immediately taken in by his warmth, care and genuine enthusiasm for teaching, students, family, rugby/rugby league and Moto GP racing.
Described as a ‘good sort’, our Trades family feel his passing deeply. He left an indelible mark on all of us. At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
When the school returns to campus, we shall tell our stories, grieve, and celebrate his life and maybe, run out a few of Darrell’s catchphrases.
He touched and made an impression on all our lives.
We will miss him dearly.
Extremely sad to hear of this sad news. Will missed his warm, genuine personality at the staff room.
Condolences to his family and close colleagues. What a tragic loss.
I remember Darrell well from the time when I was the Subject Librarian for ‘Vehicle Systems & Materials’ as it was then. He was always a supporter of the library. I give my sympathies to the family and his School of Trades & Services colleagues.
This is terribly sad news. I enjoyed many happy lunches with Darrell and Ian in the Building 112 staff room. It was clear he was always committed to his students and his motorcycling!
I cannot quite reconcile Darrel Edwards’ passing away. He was family, he was a friend, he was engaged with life.
Very sad news. It doesn’t seem long ago that we enjoyed a chat in the Building 112 staffroom. Condolences to all those close to Darrell
Such sad news, I enjoyed many staffroom chats with Darrell about Bathhurst and his love of racing. Thinking of everyone in his team and family. Ngā mihi Lee
What sad news and my sincere condolences to Darryl’s whānau and his team. Last week I had this unusual situation where Darrell and I connected at Auckland Radiation Oncology. We were both a little uncertain of each other, as we had to wear masks and keep our 2 metre distance. It was a very different context for us, but we made sustained eye contact, each thinking we knew the other. This news comes as a shock to me and I now wish I asked him, “Are you Darrell from Unitec?” Ngā mihi aroha Helen
omg Such sad news. My sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Darryl’s family. Will miss chatting with him in the lunch room
Such sad news, another special person gone too soon.
Kia ora
So sad to hear, another person has left too soon Although I did not know Darryl well, only in passing. But Unitec, I feel we are like a whanau and community that cares. Nga mihi aroha ki te whanau o Darryl, tino pouri te ngakau ahau.
