The special offer is back!  If you qualify you’ll receive an Auckland Transport HOP card pre-loaded with credit, to trial public transport for two weeks. It’s a great way to test out an active commute to work instead of sitting in your car – you can explore your options for free and trial a bus or train commute or a combination of both.

It’s not just for use during peak times, you can use it in the evenings or weekends and make savings on parking and taxis!

Using public transport can provide health benefits and a less stressful commute, you’ll also save on petrol costs, contribute to one less car on the road and you can use your no-drive time to catch-up on some reading while you ride to work! So why not give it a go?

To apply you need to fill out Auckland Transport’s short  registration survey. If you do qualify you’ll be contacted by them and your card will be sent to you the following week.

Getting more active – energise your work day with an active commute

Interested in getting more active but not sure how to squeeze it into your busy schedule? Build it into your work day a couple of times a week, by making your commute more physically active. If you’re not walking distance from work, consider cycling or using a combination of walk/bus/cycle/train – whatever works for you.

Taking the train may not sound like an active way to commute, but a U.S. study found that train commuters walked on average 30% more a day. Public transport users also walk more to get to the bus stop and their final destination. So besides the physical benefits from moving more, don’t forget about the mental health aspect which includes reduced stress and increased social interactions.

Note for cyclists: Bikes can be taken on all trains at no charge – look for the carriage sign designated for bikes and prams.
