B48 Asbestos Removal from Monday 11 August

Kia ora koutou,

As part of the seismic strengthening works on Building 48 (B48) at the Mt Albert campus, contractors will begin removing Class A and Class B asbestos from Monday, 11 August.

The project team is following strict health, safety, and environmental protocols to ensure the wellbeing of staff, students, contractors, and visitors during this work.

Safety measures in place include:

  • Regulatory compliance – WorkSafe has been notified and an Asbestos Removal Control Plan (ARCP) has been prepared and approved.
  • Site security – A perimeter fence will be erected around B48 to restrict unauthorised access. Scrim will be fixed to the inside of the fence for additional security and privacy.
  • Decontamination and containment – A 3-stage decontamination unit, exclusion zone, and Negative Air Unit (NAU) will be in place to prevent airborne particles from leaving the work area.
  • Location of asbestos – The majority of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) are inside the building and the boiler room.
  • Safe disposal – All asbestos debris will be sealed in approved asbestos waste bags or wrapped in polythene and transported to a licensed hazardous-waste disposal facility.
  • Independent air quality monitoring – Maynard Marks (Specialist Asbestos Consultant) will carry out daily air monitoring to ensure air quality remains within safe limits at all times.
  • Final clearance – Once removal is complete, Maynard Marks will inspect the site and issue an Asbestos Clearance Certificate before any further works commence.
  • Timeframe – Asbestos removal works are expected to take approximately four weeks.

We appreciate that this work may cause some disruption. The project team is committed to minimising any impact while ensuring a safe and efficient demolition process.
