Miriam Maselino studied full time at Unitec for the past three years and recently started a job here, in our enrolments team. We caught up with her to hear about her experience as a student…
What is your role at Unitec and what did you study?
I am an Assessment Support Officer in Enrolment Processing – Operations where I assess student applications from the minute they come through, right up to getting enrolled to study here. The degree I studied and graduated here at Unitec was the Bachelor of Business in (Management). It took me three and a half years to complete. It definitely has its relevance to the job I am currently in now. Working in Enrolment Processing has many challenges (which I like) but I enjoy it.
Why did you decide to complete the Bachelor of Business?
In 2014 (my last year in high school) I decided that if I just studied a bit more (even if it takes another three years), it would lead me to better and greater opportunities, and it did!
My parents have supported me throughout my studies. I come from a small and young family so there weren’t many commitments that I had whilst studying, however being a 22-year-old being dependent on my parents as my main source of income made me feel a bit guilty! But hey, it’s been all worth it.
What was something that stood out in your studies?
Surprisingly, I enjoyed presenting! My career goal is to be in Human Resources, mainly in Recruitment. I also conducted my internship here with the Unitec Human Resources (HR) team where I was given opportunities to showcase my presentation skills and interact with staff in Recruitment, HR Services, HR Business Partners and help a bit with Payroll. The opportunities that Unitec offer are something I feel students shouldn’t take for granted.
Unitec is a great place to study, and with the changes happening at the moment just shows how much we care about our students. I would also like to give a special shout out to Ken Newlands, Alan Lockyer and Lance Laulala who have made my student experience with Unitec great!
Amazing mahi Miriam! We’re lucky to have you on the team 🙂
