What is Yammer?
Yammer is a social networking platform that can allow groups to be restricted to an organisation’s staff members. Yammer allows for greater collaboration with anyone at Unitec by working in groups, sharing files, and co-editing content.
Yammer helps many organizations and individuals ‘work like a network’. Here are a few of the things many users do within Yammer to better work like a network.
- Say hello to Yammer
- Manage a group
- Join or Create a group
- Get the Yammer app to engage from your mobile device(s)
Where do we find Yammer?
The Yammer App can be opened by signing onto your Office 365 Account or go to https://www.yammer.com/unitec.ac.nz
Is Unitec’s Yammer channel moderated?
No. As with all social media, every user can freely publish, and we rely on staff in our Unitec community to self-moderate
Who can join our Unitec Yammer network?
Users must have a @unitec.ac.nz email address
Can I access external Yammer Groups too?
Yes, signon to Yammer, click on the Settings icon (top left) and select Browse External Networks. You can Join networks from other organisations from here and contribute to an even wider community! This is also how you access external networks once you have joined them.
Here are some tips to getting the most out of Yammer, and keeping it a nice place for everyone.
Yammer is really good for:
- Sharing great work stories and pictures – offer some colour/flavour of what’s happening in your part of Unitec
- Collaborating with your colleagues
- Crowd-sourcing information
- Sharing interesting articles or other web-content
- Letting people know what events are on.
Like any other social network, it’s important to consider what you post:
- Don’t get personal.
- Don’t spread racism, sexism or any other kind of bigotry.
- Don’t post anything that may be sensitive or confidential.
Some final tips to make Yammer a great work tool for everyone:
- Keep your posts succinct
- If you have lots of posts about the same theme or project, consider setting up a group.
- Conversation is great, but if it’s just two of you conversing publicly take it offline: meet up, or get on the phone.
