As part of our ongoing programme to strengthen and modernise our digital services, all Unitec and MIT devices will be upgraded to Windows 11. This work is time‑bound and needs to be completed by early September 2026.
Below are some common questions to help you understand what’s happening and what you can expect.
Please read through the FAQs before contacting the IT Service Desk.
Why are we upgrading to Windows 11?
- Windows 10 is no longer supported
Windows 10 reached its End of Life in October 2025. We are currently in a grace period that lasts until September 2026, after which Microsoft will stop providing essential security updates.
- Avoiding large additional costs
If we don’t complete the upgrade by September 2026, the organisation would have to pay substantial extra support fees just to receive basic security upgrades.
- Improved security and compliance
Staying on an outdated operating system creates security risks and may place us out of compliance with cyber-insurance and industry standards.
Windows 11 includes stronger built-in protections, such as:
- Hardware based security
- Better identity protection
- Improved malware defences
These features help protect kaimahi, ākonga and the organisation.
- Better performance and experience
Windows 11 is designed to run smoothly on modern hardware and works better with Microsoft 365 apps. It supports today’s work patterns without changing the way you use your everyday tools.
- Future-ready technology
Upgrading now ensures we stay compatible with upcoming Microsoft features and avoids a rushed, large‑scale upgrade later on.
What is changing (and what isn’t)?
What is changing
- The operating system (Windows 10 → Windows 11).
- Access to some non-approved software/applications may change
What is not changing
- Core software/applications & programs
- Your files, folders, and settings
- Your security access
- How you use your core tools
This is a standard upgrade, so all core applications, files and bookmarks etc you need for work will remain where they are, following some prep work that we will provide instructions for.
How will the roll-out work?
Phased rollout
We will roll out the upgrade department by department. This helps us finish on time and reduces disruption.
Depending on your device, one of two things will happen:
- Some staff will receive a new laptop, or
- Some staff will be given a loan laptop for the day while their device is upgraded.
Support from the IT team
The IT/Digital team will be available throughout the rollout. After your upgrade, we’ll be ready to help with things like:
- Docking stations
- Monitors
- Specialist or faculty-specific software
What do we need from staff?
- Department “Change Champions”
Each department will be asked to nominate a Change Champion who will coordinate scheduling, communication, and rollout planning with the project team.
If you haven’t already, please send your department’s Change Champion contact details to Katie Barden – kbarden@unitec.ac.nz.
- Pre-update backup of your local files and bookmarks
Prior to your device being upgraded, we will provide you with instructions for how to save all your local files to One Drive, as well as how to sync or backup Favourites/Bookmarks in Microsoft Edge. This will ensure a smooth transition once you are working from Windows 11
- Post-update instructions
You will receive instructions for what to expect after you receive your Windows 11 laptop, from switch-on right up to desktop access (including screenshots and timing) and how & where to download all the applications or software you require.
Will this disrupt my work?
We will work directly with each department to plan the upgrade at a time that causes as little disruption as possible.
Most staff will be able to continue working normally either on:
- their newly upgraded device, or
- a loan laptop provided for the day.
Who can I contact if I have questions?
Your department’s Change Champion will be your first point of communication and will be in touch with you soon.
You can also reach out to the IT/Digital Team via the standard service desk channels at any time.
