Personal safety on campus (and reporting incidents)

As part of our concern for your personal safety and security, Unitec encourages awareness of the dangers inherent in any community of this size. Everyone has the right to feel safe on campus and the Unitec Security Team have provided advice below on how we can all help that happen.

You can help safety on campus by:

  • Recognising risks and taking steps to avoid potentially hazardous situations
  • Making use of Unitec’s Security’s presence (24/7) and reporting suspicious activity
  • Use the Incident Report Form to record and advise Security if you witness or are involved in any security Incident

The Security Centre is in Building 16. The Centre is staffed from 8.00am – 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. The Security Team patrol continuously, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Mt Albert Campus – The Security Team 24 hour contact numbers are (09) 815 4321 ext 7777 or 7114 or Mobile: 021 610 877 . If you are on campus, simply dial the extension number. If the security office is unattended, calls are diverted to the security patrol’s cellphone.

Waitakere Campus – Unitec Waitakere security staff are located in building 510 and operate Monday to Friday between 6.30am and 10.30pm and weekends 8.00am to 4.00pm. Security staff can be contacted on ext. 5097, which may be diverted to the security patrol’s cellphone. Outside of these hours, calls for security assistance should be made to ext. 7777.

Getting help

Report any suspicious behaviour on campus to the Unitec Security Team, no matter how unimportant, or irrelevant it may appear. All reports will be checked and actioned, where necessary.

Personal security

What you can do:

  • Recognise potentially dangerous situations before they develop.
  • Assess the risks and have a safety plan. Think about what you would do if you felt threatened.
  • Carry a personal alarm, or be prepared to scream or shout loudly if attacked.
  • Respect your intuition. Do not let rationality override your ‘sixth sense’ – this sense could save you from danger.
  • Consider taking a self-defence course.
  • When socialising, consider the effect of alcohol. A clear head makes for easier decisions about personal safety.
  • If assaulted on campus, report the incident to the Security Centre.

Property

What you can do:

  • Never leave your wallet, bag, purse or other items of property unsecured or unattended.
  • Only carry cash for your immediate needs.
  • Clearly mark your property.
  • Never carry your personal identification number (PIN) with your credit cards and never tell anyone what your PIN number. Make sure people behind you cannot see your PIN when you are at the EFTPOS terminal or automatic teller machine (ATM).
  • Carry your bag, or purse close to you. Do not put them on the floor when in a toilet cubicle.
  • Do not leave keys, cash or other valuables in desk drawers or filing cabinets.
  • Lock your car and office when you leave them.
  • Report all theft to the Security Centre using their initial “incident report” form.
  • The lost and found property office is located at the Security Centre in Building 16 and managed by the Security Team.

Security escorts

Staff from the Security Centre are available to escort students and staff between buildings and campus car parks. To arrange this service, please call Security on (09) 815 4321 ext 7777 or 7114. Please note that the Security Team may be busy and there could be a short delay.

In your car

What you can do:

  • Park in an illuminated, busy area and make sure your surroundings are safe before getting out of your car.
  • Do not leave valuables in your car.
  • Always lock your car securely, close the windows and lock the boot.
  • Walk confidently to and from your car, with your keys held ready to open the door.
  • Check the back seat or hatch for intruders before getting into the car.
  • Once inside, lock all doors and keep the windows closed, if feasible.
  • If a passing motorist indicates that you should stop, keep driving to a service station. If you decide to stop, stay in the car with the doors locked and the window partly open to speak through. Note the vehicle registration and drive away if you feel threatened.

Out walking

What you can do:

  • Avoid lonely places, especially at night. Walk only on lit walkways away from shrubs and trees and do not take short cuts.
  • Be alert and walk purposefully – confidence deters attackers. Walk with a friend, or stay with a group.
  • Be wary of strangers, on foot, or in cars, who ask directions. If in doubt, move away and note vehicle type and registration number.
  • If someone is following you, change direction and go to an area where there are other people.
  • If you feel unsafe anywhere at any time, contact the Security Team and request an escort.

Fire

What you should do:

  • Operate the nearest fire alarm.
  • Immediately contact the emergency services on 1-111 and provide details of the location and extent of the fire.
  • Contact the Security Team and provide details of the location and extent of the fire.
  • Leave the area and gather in the designated assembly area.
  • DO NOT USE THE LIFTS.
  • Do not block road ways, as emergency services may need to use them.
  • Do not re-enter the building until told to do so by fire service personnel, building fire wardens, or a Security officer.

Parking

A parking policy is in force at Unitec which allows for the clamping, or towing of vehicles infringing the parking provisions. Clamped vehicles can be released upon paying a $30 release charge. Vehicles are towed to a campus holding pound behind the Security Centre. Ace Towing are contracted to carry out this task. Vehicles can be recovered after paying a fee of $80 at the Security Centre. Cars are towed as a last resort and any inconvenience is regretted.

If you regularly drive a car to Unitec, you can use the Staff Car Park Permit Request Form to apply for a staff car parking permit which allows you to park in any of the free staff or general car parks on the Mt Albert campus. NB Staff still need to pay if parking in any of the pay and display car parks.
