Ramadan Mubarak

This year, in New Zealand Ramadan starts at sunset 11 March 2024 or at sunset 12 March 2024 (depending on the confirmed ‘sighting’ of the moon). The first day’s fast will end at 7.45 PM and it will gradually go earlier by about a minute daily as the month progresses. Breaking the fast at sunset is a requirement for the fast, so we request Unitec Kaimahi to please allow Muslim students/staff some time for breaking fast and quick prayer.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims around the world. It is observed by fasting from dawn until sunset, refraining from eating, drinking, smoking, and unpreferable behaviour. The fast is broken each evening with a meal called Iftar, often starting with dates and water, followed by Maghrib Salat (sunset prayer) and a larger meal.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five basic tenets of Islam, which are the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and practice. The other tenets include the declaration of faith (Shahada), prayer (Salat), charity (Zakat), and pilgrimage (Hajj) for those who are able.

Ramadan is not only about abstaining from physical needs but also about spiritual reflection, increased devotion, and worship. It’s a time for Muslims to seek forgiveness, practice self-discipline, and strengthen their connection with Allah (God). It is also a time for increased charity and community involvement. The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festival of breaking the fast, which includes communal prayers, feasting, and giving of gifts.
