Ramadan Mubarak!
The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) announced that Ramadan began (Friday, 24th March) for Muslims in NZ, InsyaAllah. We wish everyone who celebrates a blessed and meaningful month ahead.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food and drink, and engaging in acts of worship and charity. It’s a time for reflection, self-discipline, and spiritual growth.
If you have Muslim friends or colleagues who are fasting, here are some recommendations you can do:
Wish them “Ramadan Mubarak” or “Ramadan Kareem”. This will make their day
Avoid put them on the spot in front of others by asking if they’re fasting.
Please be mindful when you are having delicious meals in front of them. Perhaps ask if they mind, though most of them may not.
Again, avoid organise a work feast/lunch during fasting hours, if possible.
Do remind them they’re doing this for a good cause.
Sometimes comments like “I should fast too, I need to lose weight!” would receive a reply such as “Ramadan fasting is more than that!”. Instead, perhaps ask them “what does fasting mean to you”
Let’s all support and respect each other during this special time. Ramadan Kareem!
