Unitec’s Rainbow and Ally network is hitting 2025 with a renewed range of events and initiatives, designed to raise awareness of the network and its support of LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality for kaimahi and ākonga.
The 30-strong kaimahi network won the Outstanding Contribution by a Project Team at last year’s Staff Excellence Awards, recognised for its passion and progress in fostering belonging and support for rainbow communities at Unitec.
One of the network’s co-ordinators, Wellbeing and Safety Advisor Maree Lightfoot, says the award was a huge boost for the network and its supporters.
“To me, the award has increased awareness around diversity and inclusion of the LGBTQI+ and Ally community at Unitec and recognised the amazing mahi that the network has done, which is all voluntary,” she says.
To mark the start to the year, a range of kaimahi and ākonga will paint a mural in the Rainbow Room in Te Puna (next to the events kitchen).
Following that, Unitec’s network is running a panel discussion, Q & A and morning tea, Curiosity Connects, at the Mt Albert campus on Wednesday, 12 February. Hosted by the TEU, it will feature participation from members of the network. More information is available on the Events page here.
They will also have a promotional stand at the Big Gay Out at Coyle Park in Point Chevalier on Sunday, 16 February.
Maree says the network has helped change perceptions and behaviours at Unitec through initiatives and events such as creating non-binary toilets, establishing the Rainbow Room, and updating the rainbow flags at both campuses.
She says they’re hoping to re-create some of their past activities and initiatives, including Pink Shirt Day bake sale, and participation in the nationwide Sweat With Pride, which raises funds for life-changing Rainbow and Takatāpui support services.
“Upcoming education sessions and networking events will hopefully mean kaimahi and ākonga feel comfortable and safe bringing their whole selves to Unitec each day,” she says.
“Language is very important so introducing and encouraging the use of pronouns has been a great start in this area.”
The network is always looking for new Rainbow and Ally members, so if you’re interested in joining, please email ally@unitec.ac.nz.
