Pacific librarian recognised again for outstanding contribution to Aotearoa’s library sector

Subject Librarian (Pacific), Sana Saleem has received Te Rau Herenga o Aotearoa LIANZA (Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa) Professional Excellence Award for a second year.

The LIANZA Professional Excellence Award is given to members who have shown excellence and innovation in their workplace.

Sana first received the honour last November and was named again at this year’s LIANZA National Conference held in Wellington recently.

The citation from the credentials committee reads: “Sana has made an inspiring commitment to her own outreach and engagement activities. Her ability to forge and nurture ongoing relationships is commendable and deeply appreciated by the students and staff with whom she partners and connects,”

“Sana’s efforts to raise the profile of librarianship and library services for Pacific peoples are also noteworthy.  Her dedication, service and commitment are significant, valued and appreciated.”

The recognition is extra special for Ms Saleem who was present to receive her award. Accompanying her were Library Manager Anna Wheeler and fellow Subject Librarian Adrian Jenkins.

“This professional recognition is one of the highlights in my career as a Pacific librarian working at Unitec,” says Ms Saleem.

“Vinaka vakalevu to LIANZA for the acknowledgement of my mahi and service in academic libraries and education. I extend my gratitude and respect to my family, Unitec library team, colleagues, students and community who have shared this journey with me.”

Ms Saleem proudly represents her Fijian heritage, hailing from Saunaka village (father) and Sabeto, Nadi (mother), in her everyday mahi.

Sana also presented at the conference during workshops on climate action in our libraries and navigating the vaka for Pasifika in the GLAMR (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums & Records) sector.

More than four hundred attended the conference from across Aotearoa’s diverse library and information sector. The theme this year was Ko au te taiao, ko te taiao ko au | Sustaining and Changing.
