Our Scholarship programme – help support students in our priority groups

In June we opened our scholarship programme for semester 2, which included some new funding options that focus on our priority groups, Māori and Pacific, alongside ‘equity’ and Waitākere (Nursing, Social Practice and DHB Health) scholarships. The response from Pacific students has been good but to date we have only had 8 applications for the 25 scholarships available to Māori students.

To profile our priority group scholarships, Student Success sent out a direct mail campaign to all Māori and Pacific students currently enrolled, as well as those going through the application process. They have also used social media, the What’s On student communication and contacted various people and teams who are in direct contact with these groups.

Teaching staff – how you can help

The Scholarship team would appreciate any support you can provide with identifying students that potentially meet the criteria, especially for the Māori funding, and to encourage them to review the options available. Your relationship with students is key to improving the number of application submitted.

It’s important to emphasise that these are not ‘traditional’ scholarships – they are not for the ‘best and brightest’ students – we all need to help change this misconception. The scholarship are specific to financial hardship, supporting progression of study and, recognising students who can show their motivation to succeed and a commitment to their community.

The application process is another misconception, so please promote that it is straightforward and support their applications however you can or direct them to the ‘drop in’ sessions or Scholarship Manager – details below.

Students need to apply before the deadline of 5 and 8 July (depending on the scholarship) – dates may be extended if application numbers still haven’t increased sufficiently.

Student scholarship info drop in’s

These have been running in Te Puna every Monday 11.00am – 1.00pm (next to the sushi shop) and will continue if the application deadlines are extended. If students are Waitākere based, they can send a message to scholarships@unitec.ac.nz.
