The heavens may have opened on Day 2 of ASB Polyfest, but not even the heavy downpour could dim the energy and excitement surrounding the Northern Stars netball team’s visit to the MIT and Unitec marquee.
Ākonga from several schools gathered as Stars players Mila Reuelu-Buchanan, Charlie Bell, Kate Burley and Maia Wilson kicked off a friendly competition with a vertical jump challenge. As students took turns to impress the elite athletes, our marquee was surrounded by loud cheers and a competitive atmosphere.
While Ms Bell, who along with playing professional netball is currently studying for her Bachelors in Primary Education managed the standing reach height, Ms Reuelu-Buchanan who is also a qualified social worker, joined her teammates in encouraging students and sharing tips between jumps, adding to the vibrant, inclusive atmosphere under the marquee.
Kaimahi volunteers from MIT and Unitec’s Schools of Sport and others, were on hand to connect with ākonga and their whānau, answering questions about study pathways and showcasing the wide range of qualifications on offer.
A 360-camera setup near our stand became another crowd favourite, capturing slow-motion spins, Charlie’s Angels poses and spontaneous dance moves from students and Stars alike.
ASB Polyfest continues through the week, with upcoming activations led by Healthcare & Social Practice (Saturday).
