A reminder of the new car parking plan

In last week’s email, Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, said:

Mt Albert:

  • The southern carpark (approx 350 parks) will remain as free parking until the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development asks us to hand it back to them. We don’t have a date for this yet and will have around two weeks’ notice of the hand over.
  • Payment will be required on all other parking spaces Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm for all staff and students, capped at a maximum of $3 per day or $1 per hour.
  • Payment will not be required during Unitec breaks or in the weekends.

Waitākere:

  • The maximum daily rate at the multi-storey parking building (B530) will increase from $3 per day to $4 per day for staff and learners.
  • Kaimahi and ākonga will need to show your Unitec ID to the carpark attendant when paying to get this Unitec rate.

We heard your comments around equity of payment between the two campuses. While we would prefer to have the same rate, Unitec-Te Pūkenga already subsidises the cost of the Waitākere parks which are owned by Auckland Transport and with a recent increase to our contracted rate, we would make too much of a loss keeping it at $3/day.

At Mt Albert, paid parking is a new initiative to help lower demand. Based on your feedback, we are starting with the $3 rate (down from $4 in the proposal) and will keep a careful eye on demand and revenue across both campuses.

While the new charges at Mt Albert are necessary, we want to help where we can. Following the consultation last year, we responded by making parking free after 4pm, on the weekend and during Semester breaks. To help with other transport options, we’ve mapped our onsite bike shelters and the 20 shower facilities on campus (map here) and we’re committing to maintaining and – where needed – upgrading the shower facilities.

Information on our website:

Parking at Unitec Mt Albert campus

Parking times and fees

Parking is $1 per hour, up to a cap of $3 per day. This applies Monday to Friday 8am – 4pm (parking is free outside these hours). Paid parking applies for both ākonga (students) and kaimahi (staff).

Parking stickers

Both ākonga and kaimahi need to display a parking sticker inside the vehicle windscreen and pay for parking.

  • Ākonga can get a car parking sticker from student central.
  • Kaimahi can get a car parking sticker from the security office.

Visitor, mobility and carpooling parks

Visitor car parks

There are nine visitor car parks available outside building 111. Staff members can book car parks by:

  1. Using your Outlook calendar to book a carpark using the ‘Rooms’ option. Scroll down to choose a park that is available at the time you need.
  2. Emailing your request to carparking@unitec.ac.nz

Mobility car parks

There are mobility parks in most of the car park areas. These are identified in the map below.

Carpooling parks

Several car parks are reserved for staff or students carpooling together. You will need to display a carpooling sticker in your car to use the carpooling parks (as well as pay the parking fee). To get a carpooling sticker, email the Sustainability Team at oneplanet@unitec.ac.nz and provide the following:

  1. Your name and your student or staff ID number, and
  2. The name and ID number of everyone you are carpooling with.

If you do not have a carpooling buddy, get in touch anyway. Please include detail about your commute (what suburb you travel from and what days and times you need to be on campus), and our Sustainability team will put you in touch with some possible matches.

Event parking

Visitors to Unitec will need to pay for parking unless a visitor park has been booked for them.

If you receive a fine or are towed

Unitec car parking is actively monitored. A fine of $65 can occur if you:

  • Do not pay for parking.
  • Are not authorised to park in reserved areas, including mobility and visitor spaces.
  • Park in unmarked areas such as footpaths, entryways and grass berms.

Pay your fine

Pay your fine online at the LPR enforcement services website.

Challenge your fine

You can appeal on the LPR enforcement services website if you wish to challenge the fine.

Request an extension to the payment due date.

To request an extension email admin@lpr.co.nz with detail of your notice number and vehicle registration.

If you are towed

If you do not pay your fine by the due date, your vehicle can be towed. Contact Southern District Towing, 38 Oakleigh Avenue, Takanini Phone 0800 008 111 to organise your car’s release. There is a release fee of $250 + any outstanding fine not already paid.

Planning for the future

In last week’s email, Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, said:

The aim of our new parking plan is predominantly to manage demand on our car parks (at Mt Albert).

With our new consolidated campus, parking spaces have reduced, putting more pressure on the space we do have. We encourage those who can, to explore alternative ways to get to campus, such as public transport, carpooling, biking and walking.

We will regularly review the demand for and revenue from parking. We’ll allocate any surplus funds to initiatives that support sustainable transport options, like upgrading showers and providing good bike shelter areas.

At this stage, there are no concrete plans for new carparks as our Infrastructure and Commercial teams are working on the consolidation of our Mt Albert campus. However, we will continue to look to the future as we plan for long-term maintenance, building upgrades, and potential carpark options.

We have answered more of your questions on our Te Aka car parking page.

If you have questions about parking logistics please email carparking@unitec.ac.nz.
