New app supports international students

A new tool to help our International students has already been opened over 2,700 times. The iCent App acts as a ‘one-stop shop’ to guide international students through their study experience at Unitec.

Prior to a student’s departure from their home country, they can upload their student visa to the app. They’ll find information on what to expect when they arrive in New Zealand and on campus. There’s plenty of helpful information including a guide to orientation, campus maps, security contacts, health insurance, immigration compliance, driver’s license and more.

And it’s all presented in the language of the student’s choice!

As the Semester progresses, events and workshops will be uploaded for students and the functionality allows staff to send notifications and reminders in the lead-up to those events.

Feedback from the first group of users (the Student Connectors) has been great. They said that the app delivered all information they needed in an effective way and that it would minimise anxiety when a student starts their journey here.

The latest report shows promising figures too. The app has been used by 363 people from 81 cities around the world and was opened over 2,700 times.

Jasmine Patel Govind, International Marketing Advisor, is happy with the new tool’s performance.

“We have been extremely pleased with the improvements we’ve seen in student responsiveness and communication, and it’s directly attributable to the use of the iCent app. So far, 88.7% of users have returned to the app to access information. It’s an easy platform to locate all Unitec related information. The average time a student spends on the app is a little over 11 minutes, which also indicates the quality of information presented to students” said Jasmine.

Want to give it a try? Download the iCent app from Google Play or App Store, select New Zealand as your country and Unitec as your institute and create a new user profile. Enjoy!
