Lowering our cybersecurity risk: Local Admin Access to be removed from staff desktops and laptops

Director of Information Technology, Hamish Martin shared the below information regarding our cybersecurity…

Kia ora koutou

To lower our cyber security risk and align with Te Pūkenga Security protocols, we will be removing the local admin access from staff desktop and laptop computers (starting with Windows 10 devices)

With the increased connection between systems and devices, along with flexible working, the cyber threat that exists today is ever-increasing. We must be vigilant to adequately protect ourselves.

What is Local Admin Access?

Currently at Unitec this special access is enabled for all staff, but not used by everyone. Local Admin Access allows the user to install unqualified software which could contain malware (e.g. viruses) that can change computer security settings, which makes user accounts an appealing target for hackers. Some staff also use this access to configure systems and applications.

Why is this Access being removed?

At its most dangerous, the all-powerful Local Admin Access allows hackers to bypass critical security settings, delete system logs, impersonate other logged-on accounts, run exploit code or tools, and eventually gain access to our sensitive security. In today’s security world, cyber criminals have very advanced methodologies, and the risk level is simply too high.

Added to this, there are now other ways to provide people with the tools and ‘things’ they need without this kind of access. The removal of Local Admin access is required to lower the threat to our systems and information.

When will it be removed?

This access will be disabled on our staff devices in a staggered approach:

  • Monday 20 February: Staff in service/support departments
  • Monday 10 April: Staff in our Schools

The change does require an update from the network, so it will not activate until you next login when you are on campus.

How will I install ‘things’ on my desktop/laptop?

On each of your computers in the menu, you have an item called the “Software Centre”, this contains a list of common applications and software that is approved for use within our environment and that we have authenticated licensing for.

You will still be able to self-install any of the software from here – for more information on the Software Centre see our article on Te Aka.

Can’t find the application in the Software Centre or having issues?

Call the IT Help Desk or log a self-service ticket for assistance. For new software requests go to ‘IT Self Service’ on the Quicklinks menu on Te Aka. Make sure the IT menu on the right is set to ‘All categories’, then find the “New and Existing Software Request” template. Or here is the direct link for IT Self Service.

Thank you for your understanding as we work together to lower the threat to our cyber security.
