Lifting your capability at work: Workshops for all staff – register now

Our talented HR and Learning and Development teams have been offering the very popular ‘People Development’ workshops for almost a year, using their expertise to give advice and tips to over 550 staff on topics ranging from Managing Difficult Conversations and Speaking Up to Linked In and Academic Career Progression.

What’s on offer?

Check out the full list of workshops on the People Development Workshops Nest page. Some are more suited to managers, but there is something for everyone and all the workshops are free and held on campus. The team would love to see more Academic staff attending the workshops, and they encourage you speak to your manager about fitting a workshop or two into your schedule.

The workshops have been well attended and those who go to one often book in for another! For example, the ‘Difficult Conversations’ workshop has been attended by 101 staff to date; 56 staff have attended ‘Giving and Receiving Feedback’ and 40 have been to the new ‘Speak Up’ workshops.

Feature workshop: ‘Speak Up’
Speak Up:  Supporting & Enabling our Code of Conduct

“The standard you walk past is the standard you accept”

We all have a role to play in creating and sustaining a positive and safe work environment – this workshop provides you with the knowledge, tools and confidence to “Speak Up” if you experience or witness challenging behaviour.

This workshop aligns with our value of Ngākau Māhaki: Treat everyone fairly and with respect; be professional and responsive. Te Noho Kotahitanga is Unitec’s partnership between Māori and non-Māori (as well as the name of our beautiful marae) and our Code of Conduct sits alongside these principles and reflects our values. The Speak Up workshops were developed in response to questions about how to either safely handle situations that didn’t feel quite right or to respond to conduct that was clearly inappropriate.

What’s everyone saying about the workshops?

General workshops:

“Loved the examples the trainers shared and their takes on how to go apply them on our day-to-day jobs.”

“[I enjoyed the] interactions – being with a mixed group of staff, bringing ideas from all areas, being able to ask questions that were well addressed at the time. Presenters worked well together.”

Speak Up workshop:

“Great safe atmosphere, very professional handling of sensitive conversation, comfortable to discuss things.”

“Was a very useful reminder as I tend to sometimes get caught in work and might be tempted to not notice things around me or ‘let them go’.”

“All the scenarios that we discussed and explanations from both the presenters were very engaging!”\

“It was good to have practical examples to talk through of the different scenarios demonstrating concerning behaviour.”

“I got a really good overview / Refresher of the Speak Up Process and am really clear on my options in the future.”
