Why join in?

We’ve been really tested this year. We thought we were done with lockdowns, and here we are, still in the longest one to date! Our practices around learner engagement, valid and authentic assessment, and how to create an effective blend of remote learning experiences have been thoroughly stretched. Te Puna Āko Manager, Dr Joce Williams, said the Symposium is a convenient way to reconnect with our learning and teaching communities of practice on these issues – by jumping into Teams!

“Refresh your thinking, save up some ideas for the next classes you’ll be planning for, and discuss them back in your networks. Get the date into your calendar – it’s coming up soon!” she said.

The symposium theme hints that beyond the Covid-related disruptions we’ve continued to experience, beyond lockdowns and their power to throw us all out of our old comfortable realities, these experiences can inform a new state of mind founded on readiness and flexibility. Readiness comes from developing new skills. Flexibility comes from having a teaching toolkit packed with new ideas. What have we learned from Covid, what has changed forever, and what do we need to do differently? Join us online at the November symposium to look out at this frontier.

This event offers insights into the shifting frontiers of learning and teaching, prompts us to reflect on what skills and knowledge we need to develop, showcases innovation, and gives us a space for debate, networking and collegiality.

The programme

First up in the programme is a keynote address from Professor Phill Dawson, a well-known researcher at Deakin University in the areas of assessment and digital learning, assessment for learning, and digital threats to academic integrity, on Cheating, Academic Integrity and Assessment Security. Prof Dawson will explore the balance required between positive approaches to authenticity and integrity in students’ work, as well as what may seem to be adversarial, security-oriented approaches.

The symposium then offers choices of sessions in two streams, including an informative presentation on ProctorU (an online invigilation tool for remote exams), and others on authentic online assessment, changing up your e-learning approach, a video of ākonga/learners’ reflections about studying remotely, an open session for discussion of issues, and more.
