Kidding around with the new goats at Te Puna Kararehe

Harry (white and brown) and Toby (black) are settling in well to Te Puna Kararehe.

In cute animal news, Te Puna Kararehe (TPK) – Animal Behaviour and Husbandry Centre, has welcomed two new members to their menagerie.

Harry and Toby are small cross-breed goats. The TPK team has been on the look-out for goats for a while and these two fit the bill, being small and healthy. The pair, which came to Unitec from a small lifestyle block in Taupaki where they were wreaking havoc on their owner’s olive trees, will be housed with the chickens.

As well as being super cute, Harry and Toby will offer our students new learning opportunities in large animal handling and husbandry. Although the goats are quite small, the principles are the same as with larger animals, and the hands-on teaching of nutrition, health-care (especially foot issues) and behaviour will be invaluable.

The goats appreciate donations of weeds and tree clippings from home, so feel free to drop these in to TPK after you’ve pruned your trees. Some plants are not good for them, so check this article first.
