Since February, we’ve had a new provider for student advocacy. Kahui Tu Kaha is an independent advocacy service that is here to support students towards academic success and personal wellbeing.
The service contract has reduced from two fulltime advocates to the equivalent of one advocate for four days. Part of the Student Wellbeing team, the three Student Advocates: Julie Watson, Karyn Black and Vasa Tasele, job share across the week. They’re available at these times:
Mt Albert campus:
Monday to Wednesday: 9am – 4pm
Thursday: 9am to 12pm
Waitakere campus:
Thursday 9am – 12pm
Letting students know about Kahui Tu Kaha
Please let your students know that Kahui Tu Kaha is there to support them with any issues, including academic, financial, accommodation or personal wellbeing. Often the team will refer the student to other support services within Unitec, such as the Wellness Centre, Access4Success or Financial Services. As well as supporting where needed, they’re focused on empowering our students to help and advocate for themselves, and will give them strategies and information to find solutions.
The team is keen to meet our students! It’s always less daunting approaching someone who you’ve already met, so they’d like to take advantage of times when students are together. They’ll do a quick introduction of who they are and what they do. Please contact studentadvocates@kahuitukaha.co.nz to invite one of our Student Advocates to a student meeting or event.
