Shannon Wallis

Meet Shannon Wallis, who has progressed from Civil Engineering student to Environmental Solutions Centre researcher. Originally from South Africa, she loves spending time at the bach, and is coping with lockdown by having a Marvel marathon!

What is your role?
I started my journey at Unitec as a Civil Engineering student and after graduation started working in the industry as well as a part-time Research Assistant for Tūapāpā Rangahau. Currently, I am a Research Associate for the Environmental Solutions Research Centre, working on novel solutions for asbestos waste, indoor air quality and waste reduction for the construction industry.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
I am a total homebody so my favourite thing to do is sit on the couch and read a good book. It’s always nice when my husband brings me a surprise cup of tea and a cookie.

The view from Colville

What’s your favourite place on Earth?
My favourite place is the bach at Colville. It is almost in the middle of nowhere and really takes me away from the bustle of Auckland. It’s my favourite place because I can disconnect from everything, relax and recharge.

Tell us a memory from childhood…
I came to New Zealand at a young age from South Africa and it was highly entertaining to my classmates when I would say weird names for some things. It still slips out from time to time and people still chuckle at how I pronounce some words.

Can you recommend a good movie?
With the current lockdown, my husband and I are doing a Marvel movie marathon. Didn’t realise how many movies there were! It is taking a very long time, but we are really enjoying it. So far, my favourite character is Drax as he appeals to my sense of humour

Tell us an achievement you’re proud of…
I am currently completing my PhD and with less than a year until submission, I can finally see the end! It has been a slow process with many complications due to lockdowns, but hopefully the end research will be useful to future generations.

Best show you’ve been to?
Back when we were allowed nice things, I remember going to the ‘Wicked’ musical with my mum and sister. It’s the backstory of the Wizard of Oz witches, and an amazing show and would highly recommend to everyone.

What’s your favourite food?
My favourite food is a Chinese inspired Korean dish called JaJang Myeon. It is a noodle dish with black bean sauce and my super quick and easy comfort food. It goes well with a plate of some crispy fried dumplings. Also can’t go wrong with a bit of South African melktert!
