Cher Wang

Meet Cher Wang, our Digital Experience Specialist, who loves to dance, travel and New Zealand!

What is your role and what are some of the things that you enjoyed doing this year?
My role is Digital Experience Specialist, with 50% looking after our social media channels, 30% for other digital channels, and 20% working with teams to explore possible wins. This is my second month working at Unitec, and I have many things I enjoyed doing, such as volunteering for Open Day and Graduation, meeting new people, and learning about their work and life.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
I have recently started to take dancing classes after a 12-year break. I also enjoy swimming and kayaking. I do sketches and illustrations for fun as well.

Where did you grow up and what’s interesting about that place?
My hometown is Tianjin, a city 30mins away from Beijing by train. A friend who grew up in Vancouver said Tianjin reminds him of his city. The main reason is that numerous European-style buildings and mansions were constructed in concessions. If you choose the right places to take photos, you can easily pretend you are having a great time traveling in Europe😊 My city is also famous for its sense of humor. If you call a Taxi, you will most likely be offered a trip-long talk show by your Taxi driver. Feel free to check this video about Tianjin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vwSwrMAyvw

Do you speak any other languages, what is special about that for you?
My mother language is Mandarin. I studied French for a year and barely remembered a thing. My mother language is Mandarin. I studied French for a year and barely remembered a thing. Interestingly, I still enjoy listening to people speak French while I cannot speak too much.

Tell us a funny memory from childhood…
I remember a girl from my neighborhood, she has many barbie dolls, and those barbie dolls have beautiful clothes, shoes, bags, and even costumes for parties. The girl was very generous to invite me to play dolls with her. But I had no toys to share at all. Guess what I’ve offered? Instead of being panicked, I was being creative. I taught her how to make doll clothes using old socks. We had much fun making sports suits for her barbie dolls.

What is your favourite book or movie? Why?
It is so hard just to pick one!! I would say My Octopus Teacher is my favourite movie for 2022. The viewing is not only a sensory experience but also a healing journey. It was nice to escape the world but still, be reminded of the beauty of it because sometimes right now that’s hard to find.

My two favourite people

Kids/pets/partner you want to brag about?
Must be these two human beings!

Tell us an achievement out of work that you’re proud of.
Art directed a short film that won dozens of international film festival awards; and also entered the short film competition of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival.

Is there a song that reminds you of a significant/interesting/funny time in your life?
Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. It tells the story of my husband and me, that’s why we have sung this song at our wedding😊

Best concert/show/event you’ve ever been to? What made it special?
2010 Shanghai World Expo. I visited New Zealand Pavilion and got my first impression of New Zealand built there. I walked in the silver fern jungle, watched the Haka performance, and learned about carving art. I was amazed! A few years later, I built a home here in Aotearoa.

What’s your favourite food or signature dish?
All the Asian dishes!!! No offense to the food from other places😉
