Celebration of Unitec’s Pacific Day

In a colourful showcase of Pacific culture, Unitec recently hosted its inaugural Pacific Day, bringing together communities to celebrate the rich heritage of 12 Pacific countries by 12 vibrant stalls, each meticulously crafted to represent the unique culture of a Pacific Island.  The islands represented at the event included Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Cook Islands, Rotuma, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Aotearoa, Tokelau, Tuvalu, and Niue, each contributing to the tapestry of Pacific identity on display.

One of the highlights of the day was the wonderful book displays created by the Library Team (Amy, Sana and Sara). The books offered insights into Pacific history, folklore, and contemporary issues.

Over 100 people from diverse backgrounds attended. Beyond the festivities, the organizers of First Unitec’s Pacific Day had a dedicated film crew creating sustainable resources for upcoming langue weeks online creating valuable resources to be used for Pacific Language Weeks in the future, ensuring that the celebration would have a lasting impact.

Unitec’s Pacific Day was achieved with no budget, thanks to the generosity of all involved. The Library Team, the Pacific Centre, Student Marketing, Pukenga, Maia and the Copy Centre all contributed their time and resources and importantly the people who were interviewed and shared their wonderful cultures. Organisers express their heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make Pacific Day a reality.
