Unitec kaimahi and ākonga may have noticed road name changes around our Mt Albert campus as Semester One gets off to a busy start this week.
The new road names are part of the redevelopment of the Carrington site and reference the surrounding whenua with some background provided below:
Gate Road 1 is now: Te Ara Taurapa
It is acknowledged that this road sits at a high point on the Precinct and the taurapa represents a strong presence on the landscape. It is also the stern-post of a waka.
- Gate Road 2 is now: Te Ara Kōpiko
‘Meandering of water’ referencing the road itself.
- Farm Road (Entrance 3 off Carrington Road) is now: Te Ara Kokō Wai
‘Gargling water’ also referencing the lowest point at the awa.
- Park Road is now: Te Ara Tarere
‘The copious flow of water – hitting a rock & the dissipated flow’.
- Spine Road is now: Te Ara Pūtahi
The convergence of water acknowledging this is the main road to which the others meet, therefore receiving stormwater eventually flowing into Te Auaunga.
As updates are provided, we will continue to share these with you.
