Infrastructure work on the Carrington Residential development has begun across whenua previously owned by Unitec.

39.7 hectares has been transferred to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MHUD) to establish what it is describing as “a new urban village of at least 4000 homes.”

The homes will be a mix of terraced houses, walk-up units and apartments consisting of Kiwibuild, affordable homes, rentals and public housing.

More detailed information about the project can be located on the MHUD website at Carrington residential development.

1.4 hectares of the land purchased by MHUD will remain as open space which includes the whenua that runs alongside our puna, Te Waiunuroa o Wairaka.

Protected trees within the land (under the existing Resource Management Act) will not be affected.

As part of Collective Treaty redress the development opportunity is being led by Marutūāhu, Ngāti Whātua, Waiohua-Tāmaki and their project partners. MHUD is facilitating the project on behalf of the Crown.

More detailed information can be located in the Wairaka Precinct Unitary plan which is also located on the MHUD website.

Thanks for the update. So sad to see all those trees cut down. I guess it is just the beginning. Makes you think about what could we have done differently to prevent the sale of all that land. Unitec is such an important place for training the future vocational workers of the future. I hope that in the future Unitec will still be here doing the great work we do, helping the community and the future of our great country.
