Careers Advisors’ Day: “Banding together for the success of our young people”

Sneaking in just before this week’s snap lockdown, our Unitec Pathways College (UPC) team held a successful Career Advisors’ Day, with close to 40 Secondary School Careers Advisors arriving on campus last week to hear about our programmes.

Each year UPC invites Careers Advisors from Auckland Secondary Schools to showcase what’s on offer for their students here at Unitec. This year the event included presentations on programme updates, School Holiday Workshops and our new Under 25s space on the website, followed by tours of some of our fantastic teaching spaces. The day ended in Te Puna with a mini expo, with our Academic staff available to chat, and lunch.

The event had a warm and friendly vibe, buzzing with energy and happy faces.

Renee Wilkinson, Community Engagement & Content Co-ordinator at UPC said Careers Advisors are our key contacts within secondary schools.

“For many Secondary School students, the advisors are like the bridge that connects them to future pathways. Our team has a relationship with Careers Advisors in schools across Tāmaki Makaurau, and it’s always a privilege to to host them here on campus. We were stoked with the turnout and engagement from Academic staff for the mini expo.”

Renee said the visiting advisors pointed out the manaakitanga shown by Unitec staff, with a range of teams working together on the day.

“Ultimately, everyone who plays a part is helping to share valuable information with schools so that they can pass it on to their students. Those last years of Secondary School can be a stressful time, with the added pressure of deciding on what’s next. That’s why it’s important that we step in and become visible. When our presence is felt strongly amongst schools, it can only be a good thing for all the young people out in the community. It’s like we’re all banding together for the success of our young people,” said Renee.

“Some said this was the best Careers Advisors’ Day event yet!”

The UPC team acknowledged the support of Paul Hays and Romy Sunny from our Events team, for their part in organising the mini expo, and the support of all the staff who contributed, including the academic staff who manned the stalls for their Schools.
