Auckland Pride Parade 2019

Unitec has been an official participant and supporter of the Pride Parade since 2014 when we officially joined as that year’s principal sponsor for the Pride Festival.

The 2019 Auckland Pride Parade has been making headlines due to the ongoing debate over whether police should be permitted to march while wearing their official uniform. The parade organisers announced the uniform ban following a series of hui on the topic of police inclusion. They cited concerns about police abuse rates towards Māori and diverse gender people.

In response, police announced they would not be participating in the parade, followed closely by many corporate sponsors and official partners.

Our response to date has been informed by our ALLY Network coordinators. At this stage, we believe there is still time for both parties to continue discussions. Engaging in conversation, seeking mediation and understanding honours the spirit of inclusion, and we believe is the most likely path to a positive resolution.

A more detailed letter was shared with the ALLY Network on Friday.
