Annual Bike Challenge – Let’s make it four wins in a row!

We need you – new to cycling, rusty on wheels and regular riders!

There’s just over two weeks to go and we need you! The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is an annual event and Unitec has won the Auckland Bike Challenge (in our business-size category) three years in a row, so we need riders.

The Bike Challenge is a fun, free opportunity to discover life on a bike, whether you’re new to cycling, ride regularly or need the motivation to get back on two wheels! There are events and activities, bikes to borrow, newbies coaching, prizes and fun! Check the Nest events calendar regularly to see what’s on and what’s coming up.

If you’re new to cycling you can help make a big difference to our points, and we’ll help you with finding a ride, plus for our regular riders this is a great time to get back in the saddle and challenge yourself even more!

Try it out – Just 10 minutes on a bike is all it takes…

The best part is that this is NOT about who can do the most kilometres during February. It’s about encouraging as many people as possible to give cycling a go. A 10 minute session on a bike, any time during February is all it takes!

Our team and the competition

It’s also a competition = prizes! The team is Unitec, versus other organisations who are of a comparable size. Last year we won with 24% staff participation narrowly beating Beca and Auckland Transport. This year there are already 264 companies signed up.

Our Sustainability teams will be supporting you by ensuring there are plenty of opportunities to get on a bike on campus. Go to the Nest calendar to check out all the events which will include regular lunch time rides utilising our Unitec bike fleet, a Burgers & Bikes social, plus e-bikes for you to try out. We’ll also promote in the calendar any external bike events which will include ‘urban biking’ skills workshop and ‘Bike the Bridge’. Click here to register now – event runs 1-28 February.

Remember, it’s not about the kilometres you do, it’s about giving cycling a go!

Make sure you register now. You can also find out more on the Aotearoa Bike Challenge page or contact Maja Zidov if you have any questions.

Go to our Nest page for more info – Nest > Services > Sustainability > Bike Challenge.

The Auckland Bike Challenge is run by Auckland Transport. This year the Bike Challenge is supporting Variety – the Children’s Charity. Variety supports disadvantaged children, so if you want to, you can use your participation in the event to help raise funds for Kiwi kids in need with a new bikes and helmets.
