In the heart of Auckland, a remarkable event unfolded recently. More than 520 scholars from 54 countries, all part of the  Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme, gathered for the first time in a conference that was more than just an academic meet. It was a celebration of unity, a testament to the power of shared experiences, and a beacon of hope for the future.

The conference, a proud testament to New Zealand’s long-standing scholarship legacy, was a unique opportunity for these brilliant minds to connect, learn, and share their journeys. Funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and delivered by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), the event marked a significant milestone in the scholars’ academic journey.

Bernadette Cavanagh, Deputy Secretary for MFAT’s Pacific and Development Group, expressed her pride in the world-class education that Manaaki scholars receive. She highlighted the knowledge and skills they gain in New Zealand, which they will carry back to benefit their home countries. “This is a significant opportunity for scholars, and I am proud New Zealand is investing in the development of individuals who have the potential to effect meaningful change — and create impact — in, and for, their communities,” she said.

The conference was not just about academic discourse. It was a vibrant tapestry of activities, including leadership and diplomatic panels, thematic breakout sessions, and a cultural evening. These activities were designed to enrich the learning of Manaaki scholars and support the development of scholar networks with strong, enduring connections to New Zealand.

One of our Unitec scholars, Emmanuel Simon from Papua New Guinea, who is currently studying towards his Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Electrical), shared his heartfelt experience at the conference. He described it as an extraordinary gathering of vibrant young leaders united by their passion and commitment to making a difference in their respective fields.

“The conference provided unparalleled opportunities for networking and building long-lasting connections. Scholars engaged with one another, forming bonds that are expected to endure far beyond the conference,” Emmanuel said. He spoke of the energy and enthusiasm that filled the air as like-minded individuals came together to exchange ideas and forge meaningful relationships.

As the event drew to a close, the sense of unity and camaraderie was palpable. The final moments, marked by the singing of the farewell song, were particularly emotional. Many, including Emmanuel, were moved to tears, a testament to the deep connections and shared passion that characterized the conference.

The Manaaki Scholars Conference 2024 was indeed a remarkable event, filled with hope and promise for the future endeavours of this extraordinary cohort. It was a beautiful and unforgettable atmosphere that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who attended.
