Unitec welcomed a host of budding environmental scientists, builders, architects, nurses, robotics engineers, designers and more to its campuses for the annual Unitec Open Day on Saturday.

The event at Unitec’s Mt Albert and Waitākere campuses marked a welcome return to an in-person Open Day after an absence of two years due to COVID restrictions. It followed the online event held two weeks ago.
It was attended by hundreds of prospective students and their whānau, and featured workshops and interactive sessions with lecturers, industry experts and student support teams they could learn first-hand about study options and career prospects at Unitec.
Members of Unitec’s School of Healthcare and Social Practice offered blood pressure checks and simulated CPR displays, while the School of Trades & Services used remote-controlled cars to demonstrate how vehicle suspension works for automotive engineering students.
Build more than a career with the School of Architecture!
The School of Architecture featured an amazing Jenga-like construction, while mechatronics and 3D modelling was also on display with a robotic arm used to work on circuit boards, while visual programming was used to map out rooms and spaces for those students interested in studying design and contemporary art.
Visitors toured Mataaho, our state-of-the-art trades training facility, and Te Puna Kararehe, Unitec’s animal behaviour and husbandry centre, both based at the Mt Albert campus.
As well as learning more about the range of courses on offer at Unitec, visitors also had an introduction to the pastoral care available at Unitec, which includes an on-site health centre, counselling services, career planning, disability support services, funding for studies and childcare, as well as the Maia Centre which supports the success of Unitec’s Māori students and the Pacific Centre which supports the success of its Pacific students.
More than 200 Unitec staff volunteered their support on the day and visitors were greeted at the door and offered dedicated guides to help them find what they were looking for.
The excitement, dedication and nurturing approach Unitec staff radiated on the day helped highlight the ongoing commitment to Te Noho Kotahitanga. Open Day would not have been the success it was without the aroha and manaakitanga of kaimahi, ākonga and the hundreds of whānau who visited the event to explore the opportunities available.
