Final land settlement with MHUD

Final land settlement with MHUD

The final land settlement with The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MHUD) is complete and titles have been transferred.

What does this mean for Unitec?

The land sale process has been progressing over a number of years and the final tracts have been handed to MHUD.

MHUD has communicated with key stakeholder groups and mana whenua which includes Marutūāhu, Ngāti Whātua and Waiohua-Tāmaki Rōpū.

Although the land included in the sale and purchase is intended for housing:

  • MHUD has agreed that at least 1.4 hectares of the land will remain as open space. This includes the grass that runs alongside the puna.
  • Protected trees within the land (under the existing Resource Management Act) will not be affected.

There will be a transition phase to allow Unitec time to consolidate our Mt Albert campus. During this phase:

  • up to 500 carparks, plus land utilised for prefabs B149-165 and construction area 106 will continue to be leased back to Unitec from across the Crown’s landholdings specifically for use by Unitec students, staff, and visitors.
  • The memorial gardens move is underway and will be located by August, you can find more details at ‘Our memorial grove is on the move’
  • existing tenancy agreements have been transferred to MHUD and will continue to the end of their term, including for Concentrix, the Squash Club and Penman House.

The below map shows the land that is being retained by Unitec including leased back areas (also on our website here)

Why sell the land?

The land being sold will be incorporated into the large-scale residential development, which is being led by the Marutūāhu, Ngāti Whātua and Waiohua-Tāmaki Rōpū.  The intention is to provide much-needed additional housing in a well-located area close to employment and amenities.

The sale also provides Unitec with funds to assist with consolidation of its campus and repayment of loans.

If you have any queries about the land sales, please contact Jaala Jacobs.

Hello Anne, the dark green is yes.
However, some of the land in the southwestern corner is being handed back to Ngati Whatua at the end of the year as well.

if possible please can the colour coding be added to the key on the top left of the map – also if possible please indicate which bits are actually owned by us and which bits are leased back – also how long is the lease eg is ist 2 years with right to renew for another 2 ?

    Kia ora;
Where can we see copies of the respective certificates of title for what was both sold and retained?

In agreement with Anna’s comments the map should include this colour coding in the key or it is not very clear.

Hi Sarah, I tried to give you a call to discuss the womens suffrage garden. Currently we are trying to get hold of Rod Barnett who designed the garden to understand where a possible time capsule is – if you have any history please give me a call back. Thanks Jaala
