Unitec Construction Waste project awarded Highly Commended at Zero Waste Awards

L to R: Mark Roberts (Auckland Council), Dr Terri-Ann Berry (ESRC, Unitec), Annette Day (Naylor Love) and Linda Kestle (ESRC, Unitec)

A big congratulations to Dr Terri-Ann Berry and her team for their “Highly Commended” in the Community Collaboration category at the Tāmaki Makaurau Zero Waste Awards last week for their project to reduce plastic use and waste in the construction industry.

It was an outstanding achievement, says Terri-Ann, with only four prizes awarded in this category (three highly commended and one winner) chosen from 114 nominations.

“It was a truly amazing evening with so many incredible examples of Aucklanders inspired to achieve zero waste. Our incredible team diversity and how much fun we have had whilst making such a difference made this super special.”

The team had a number of external partners and extend their thanks to:

  • Annette Day and Callum Morrison – Naylor Love
  • Mark Roberts – Auckland Council
  • Simon Burden – Buildlink
  • Julie Roberts – Mitre 10
  • Brenda Massey, Gregor Steinhorn, Hadley Brown, Penny Thompson, Asma Munir and Aki Te’evale – Taupapa Rangahau, Unitec
  • Dan Blanchon (and his team) – Applied Molecular Solutions, Unitec
  • Joanne Low, German Hernandez, Shannon Wallis and Yanina Purcell – ESRC, Unitec
  • Alex Bu – our amazing Unitec Civil Enginering Graduate who worked on this for his final year project
  • Linda Kestle – Principal Investigator, ESRC, Unitec

The project led to the use of tarpaulin covers for timber instead of plastic, which massively reduced construction waste.

“Receiving this award and its recognition was so special to our team which is uniquely multidisciplinary as well as a trans-sector approach to high impact applied research. It has taken many smaller projects, mainly run by our final year projects students in Construction, to get to this point and we are proud and thankful to them, the wider ESRC team, all at Taupapa Rangahau and our colleagues and friends at Naylor Love, Mitre 10 and Auckland Council.”

Thank-you Craig – it has been a fantastic journey – who would have thought that skip diving for a year would be so much fun ?!
