Do you want to represent Unitec on Te Pūkenga Council Interim Staff Advisory Committee?

Jacky McManus, DCE – People and Culture, has invited nominations for a position on the Te Pūkenga Council Interim Staff Advisory Committee – Unitec will have ONE representative on the Committee.

Information on the opportunity:

Te Pūkenga is committed to ensuring that the voices of the ITP subsidiaries, including Unitec’s, are heard across their various committees and platforms.

Over the next month, an Interim Staff Advisory Committee (Committee) will be established  to work with Te Pūkenga Council. It will represent the staff voice of ITPs across Aotearoa and help Council understand key matters across the subsidiary network until the end of 2022.

The interim Committee will have responsibility for developing key materials for the permanent Committee (to be established from 2023). This will include a Position Description, Terms of Reference and Election Process.

Key dates

  • Friday 18 June: Call for nominations begin
  • Sunday 27 June: Nominations close
  • 28 June: Voting begins, representative elected
  • Week beginning 5 July: Representative appointment announced
  • Week beginning 19 July: Initial Committee meeting, two Co-Chairs nominated
  • Monday 2 August: Te Pūkenga Council (Nominated Staff Advisory Committee Co-Chair attends)

Te Pūkenga will aim for diversity in the selection process. If gaps are identified, further representatives may be sought.

Why is the interim Committee being established?

The Education and Training Act (2020) outlines that representation will align with the regional divisions established by Te Pūkenga. These divisions are yet to be determined, therefore, the Council has outlined that for an interim period the Committee will include one representative from each subsidiary ITP.

Te Pūkenga has used feedback from a staff survey in 2020, forums with TEU and TIASA and the People & Culture Leads forum to develop the arrangements for this roopū.

What does an Interim Staff Advisory Committee Representative do?

As well as advising Te Pūkenga Council, the Interim Staff Advisory Committee will design and test the Committee framework and processes, ahead of the creation of a permanent Staff Advisory Committee in 2023. Additionally, it might engage in local Subsidiary initiatives – this detail will be developed over time.

What will the commitment be for representatives?

The group will meet three to four times a year. Representatives will need to be available for approximately 10 working days to attend and prepare for hui. The membership term is until 16 December 2022.

Who makes a good representative?

Applications are open to all permanent staff. A representative can be either a teaching or support staff member.

A good representative will be prepared to represent all staff interests fairly and in balance, regardless of your own views. Importantly, you will need to ensure you are well informed of Unitec and other subsidiary matters, including the values underpinning Te Noho Kotahitanga. You’ll also offer constructive input and feedback on the developments in the reform of vocational education.

What is the nomination process?

Please email human.resources@unitec.ac.nz to submit a nomination of up to 300 words for yourself or for someone you’d like to nominate – please ask their permission to nominate them. Outline why you/your nominee would like to join the committee and how you/they will fulfil the above requirements. Nominations close at 5pm, Sunday 27 June.

We’ll share the nominations and all Unitec staff will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate to represent us.

If you have any questions, please contact Jacky. We look forward to receiving your nominations!
